Abstract:
Tolylfluanid, a broad spectrum fungicide with a pronounced acaricidal action on Panonychus ulmi and Tetranychus urticae has been considered to have also some effect on Typhlodromus pyri. This compromised initially the frequent use of this fungicide for IPM schemes in apple.
The results of a large number of field trials have led to a change of this view.
Repeated tolylfluanid application in summer contributes to the natural regulation of red spider mites P. ulmi and rust mites Aculus schlechtendali through their predator T. pyri. Tolylfluanid establishes an equilibrium between predator and both species avoiding in this way the need for corrections in the lag phase with specific IPM suitable acaricides.
The tendency of a positive effect on the green background colour of apple cv.
Jonagold, a predominating quality criterium, provides tolylfluanid with an extra bonus.
Tolylfluanid complements in IPM schemes the rather restricted list of preventive fungicides for control of late scab infections in mid summer and storage diseases by preharvest treatment.
