Abstract:
One consequence of tightening guidelines for Integrated Fruit Production (IFP) could be the loss of some of the chemicals currently used for growth control and fruit thinning.
Possible alternative methods of shoot growth control include improved compact scions and dwarfing rootstocks supplemented by techniques, such as shoot pruning and bending, root restriction, regulated deficit irrigation or girdling.
Alternatives to the present chemical fruitlet thinners may be the use of more environmentally acceptable chemicals or the development of novel non-chemical thinning strategies.
The advantages and problems with these alternative methods for control of growth and cropping are discussed.
