ISHS Acta Horticulturae 347: II International Symposium on Integrated Fruit Production

BREEDING OF RESISTANT APPLE VARIETIES IN THE NETHERLANDS

Author:   J. Janse
Abstract:
In The Netherlands, breeding research on apple is carried out at the Centre for Plant Breeding and Reproduction Research CPRO-DLO in Wageningen. Several varieties have been released in the past. Nowadays, all attention is focused on the development of new varieties with good fruiting properties and resistance to scab, mildew, and possibly, canker.

Several thousands of seedlings are produced every year. They are tested for scab resistance in the greenhouse and for mildew resistance in the nursery. This is followed by selection for other important tree and fruit characteristics in the orchard. Seedlings performing well are propagated on rootstocks for further evaluation. Some of the most promising selections are described.
