ADAPTING LOW ORGANIC UPLAND MINERAL SOILS FOR CULTURE OF HIGHBUSH BLUEBERRIES

Author:   James N. Moore
Keywords:   Soil pH management, organic matter, organic mulches, irrigation scheduling
Abstract:
Highbush blueberry production historically has been limited to areas that have naturally acid soils with high organic matter and high water tables. This paper reviews the research that has led to the establishment of a successful blueberry industry on upland, mineral soils with low organic matter content and higher than optimum soil pH. Necessary soil and cultural modifications include lowering soil pH, addition of organic matter, proper irrigation scheduling, and mulching with organic materials.
