LEAF TEMPERATURE AND WATER STRESS IN STRAWBERRY

Authors:   P. Mannini, S. Anconelli
Abstract:
Leaf temperature is a recent method of estimating crop water stress. The present study was designed to test it on strawberry by comparing it to such other commonly used techniques as the tensiometer, evaporimeter and soil moisture.

Irrigation enhanced fruit yield and size. The water stress rating by measurement of the leaf-air temperature differential, was correlated to a slightly higher yield than either of the soil-based readings. Maximun yield was recorded at ΔT < 1°C and the minimum with non-irrigated control at ΔT > 4°C. The regressions calculated between the ΔT°C values and the other methods showed a high significant linearity with MET and soil moisture, and poor correlation, with soil water tension values.
