RECENT PROGRESS IN STRAWBERRY BREEDING FOR NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN GROWING AREAS OF ITALY.

Authors:   M. Leis, D. Musacchi, A. Martinelli
Abstract:
The strawberry breeding program of the C.I.V. (Consorzio Italiano Vivaisti) is described. The object of the program, started in 1984, is to obtain new strawberry cultivars of superior fruit quality and better adaptation to the italian growing conditions than those presently grown. The selection work was carried out in the northern and southern growing areas, and the criteria used were mostly based on the commercial parameters. Some families showing good fruit quality, good productivity and good production patterns were found. Three selections were named and patented in 1989: Athena (R) AE2* and Hera (R) FB3* for the South and Marmolada (R) AO8* for the North. Further work is in progress to combine the best characters, particularly fruit size, appearance and flavour together with plant productivity, pattern of production and disease resistance.
