ISHS Acta Horticulturae 345: Small Fruits, XXIII IHC

FOREWORD

Author:   P. ROSATI
Abstract:
First of all I apologize with the Authors for the late publication (three years have passed) of their papers concerning "small fruits" presented in 1990 at the XXIII International Horticultural Congress in Florence. This is due mainly to the fact that I was at that time at the University of Bologna, I moved the following November to the University of Potenza and finally, in November 1991, to the University of Ancona where I will hopefully settle.

As a consequence of that it was impossible for me to pay the required time and attention to the publication of the volume.

I wish to thank dr. V.H. Knight, dr. J.J. Luby and dr. D.W. Simpson for their work as editors and Mrs. G. Berardi who helped with the secretariat keeping also the contacts with the Authors.

This volume includes twenty-one papers: 12 on Fragaria, 1 on Ribes and 4 each on Rubus and Vaccinium. The paper on Fragaria virginiana germplasm in North America has been presented as introductory lecture in the business meeting of the Strawberry working group. It is included in the volume considering the increasing interest on octoploid strawberry germplasm.

In the Fruit Section of the International Society for Horticultural Science two working groups dealing with small fruits are active. From long time ago the Rubus-Ribes and Vaccinium group (the VI International Symposium will take place next month in Skierniewice, Poland) while the Strawberry group started only in 1988 after the first Symposium, held in Cesena, Italy, of which I have been the convener. The Symposia of the two groups occur now, every four years, keeping one year distance between them.

Considering the world proliferation of scientific meetings which are becoming every year more expensive and the financial difficulties we all have to attend, them considering the general situation of our Institutions, having realized that the same scientist are members of both groups and the industry is developed in the same areas, it has always be my dream that the two groups would merge in a larger one. That could not be realized until now, but I hope to be successeful in the future.

This volume, anyway, represents the first attempt to join the different matters.

Ancona, Italy, June 1993
Pasquale ROSATI
