POSSIBILITIES OF GROWING MEDICINAL AND AROMATIC PLANTS IN MOUNTAINOUS REGION OF SCHARA |

| Abstract:
Natural conditions in Yugoslavia and Serbia enables successive cultivation of a great number of medicinal and aromatic plants, also in higher altitude regions. The aim of this study was to investigate possibility of growing five species of aromatic and medicinal plants in the mountainous region of Schara (Josifovic, 1973; Josifovic, 1974), on altitudes of 900 m. In two years (1991, 1992), field experiments with thyme (Thymus vulgaris), hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), valerian (Valeriana officinalis), angelica (Angelica archangelica), and sage (Salvia officinalis) were established. The average yields of thyme of about 410 kg/ha, with average content of essential oil of 1.04%; hyssop of 1860–2350 kg/ha, with average content of essential oil of 0.23%; valerian about 3300 kg/ha, with average content of essential oil of 0.45–0.55%; angelica 2450–3220 kg/ha, with average content of essential oil of 0.14–0.17% sage 850–1350 kg/ha, with average content of essential oil of 1.25% were recorded. | |
