THE EFFECT OF MANURE COMPOSTED WITH DRUM COMPOSTER ON AROMATIC PLANTS |

| Abstract:
The experiment was carried out during 1989 – 91 in the North Ostrobothnia Research Station, Agric. Res. centre, (64° 40' N,25° 05' E) 150 th to the Nordic polar Circle. Eight common herbs (marjoram, hyssop, oregano, anishyssop, peppermint, caraway, basil, and dragonhead) were sown in a greenhouse between the 22nd and the 26th of March of each year. Before planting the herbs outdoors, soil was fertilized either by composted cow manure or with chemical fertilizer as a control. The amount of nitrogen with both the chemical fertilizer and the manure was about the same: 0.4 N kg/100 m2 to 1.0 N kg/100 m2, depending on the herb. The percentage of essential oil and dry matter was higher with composted manure. With marjoram, peppermint higher yields were achieved when composted manure was used. | |
