Abstract:
The only representative of the genus Sideritis in Serbia is Sideritis montana L. (Lamiaceae). It is the most abundant in the neighborhood of town of Vranje, and on the mountain of Suva Planina. The presence of flavonoids was confirmed through qualitative chemical tests and TLC. Preliminary characterization in combination with UV-VIS spectrophotometric analysis showed that these constituents belong to the group of flavons. The most abundant compound in flavonoid fraction was isolated and identified as diosmetine. Its structure was confirmed by the use of UV, IR, and MS techniques. A rather high content of the sum of flavonoids (between 1.5% and 1.7%, calculated as diosmetine), was recorded. Therefore Sideritis montana is important flavonoid source.
