ISHS Acta Horticulturae 344: International Symposium on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants

EFFECT OF HARVESTING STAGE ON THE YIELD AND ESSENTIAL OIL COMPOSITION OF PEPPERMINT (MENTHA X PIPERITA L.).

Authors:   M. Marotti, V. Dellacecca, R. Piccaglia, E. Giovanelli
Keywords:   peppermint, Mentha x piperita L., Lamiaceae, harvesting stage, yield, essential oil, GC-MS
Abstract:
The peppermint cultivar "Italo-Mitcham" was grown in northern Italy and harvested at four growth stages, from pre-flowering to crop end, to evaluate yield and oil quality. The oil was analysed by GC-MS. Full flowering produced the greatest amount of biomass, oil and menthol. Menthone decresead as plants matured whereas menthyl acetate and the undesirable menthofuran showed opposite trends.
