DIVERSITY IN CHEMOTYPE REACTION AFFECTED BY ONTOGENETICAL AND ECOLOGICAL FACTORS

Abstract:
We investigated the changes in the essential oil composition of three, earlier identified chemotypes (camphor, 1.8-cineol and borneol types) of Achillea crithmifolia W. et K. under different environmental conditions during their developmental phases. It had been established, that higher temperature and light intensity rised the level of camphor, but decreased the level of 1.8-cineol, while their effect on borneol- content was not definite. During ontogenesis from leaf-rosetten stadium till full flowering the camphor-content decreased, 1,8-cineol-content increased, while borneol content did not change. Comparing the essential oil composion of different organs, the accumulation level of camphor is higher in the flowers, the level of 1.8 -cineol is higher in the leaves, while borneol content is about the same in both organs. Changes in the proportion of minor compounds are also characteristic for chemotype. The results present important knowledge for assuring optimal and standard quality essential oil from wild-growing species.
