STRATEGIES OF PROTECTION BY SECRETORY STRUCTURES IN SOME ASTERACEAE AND LAMIACEAE

Abstract:
The Asteraceae and Lamiaceae are rich in aromatic species. The bulk of their secretory materials are produced by specialized structures typical to each family. The main function of the aromatic compounds in the vegetative organs is apparently protection against herbivores. The susceptibility of young leaves to an attack by herbivores is much higher than that of mature leaves. Accordingly, in different taxa different strategies of protection by aromatic compounds for different stages of leaf development have developed. Some such strategies are described:
