COMPARATIVE STUDY OF VOLATILE CONSTITUENTS AND ANTIMOCROBIAL ACTIVITY OF MENTHA SPECIES

Abstract:
The composition and antimicrobial properties of essential oil obtained from Mentha longifolia and Mentha arvensis growing wild in East Serbia were examined. In Mentha longifolia, p-cymene and thymol were dominant compounds, suggesting that examined samples represent new chemotype. In Mentha arvensis menthofuran and 3-octanol were major compounds. The essential oils of both species exhibited strong antibacterial activities, in particularly against Bac. subtilis. The most resistant bacteria was Strept. agalacliceae. Antifungal activities were recorded only by Mentha longifolia oil. Different antimicrobial activities of examined essential oils seems to be due to the differences in oil composition.
