PHYSIOLOGY AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPY OF THE WITHERED JUICE SAC OF PONKAN (CITRUS RETICULATA) DURING STORAGE

Author:   S. Wang
Abstract:
The Withered Juice Sac (WJS) of ponkan is a disorder developing during storage, which is a restrictive factor for long-term storage. The symptoms of the disorder were withered juice sac, tasteless, puffing, separation of rind and pulp, loose albedo and lighter flavedo.

There have been several reports on the causes of the disorder. The consumption of the nutrient substances is the primary cause, while the loss of the water is only a secondary one (Xingjie et al, 1985; Shuxian et al., 1988). During storage, the rind grew and absorbed water and nutrients from the pulp (Wang et al., 1988; Wang, 1990). The disorder was related to the senescence of the rind during storage (Wang, 1989).

The objective of this study was to further expound the causes and mechanisms of the Withered Juice Sac of ponkan by postharvest physiology and electron microscopy.
