ISHS Acta Horticulturae 343: Physiological Basis of Postharvest Technologies

POSTHARVEST QUALITY AND WATER RELATIONS OF BOUVARDIA CUT FLOWERS AS AFFECTED BY PREHARVEST TEMPERATURE AND SEASON

Author:   R. Gorsel
Abstract:
Variety, season and greenhouse temperature influence postharvest quality of the leaves and blooms of Bouvardia cut flowers. Bridesmaid, Roxanne and van Zijverden Bouvardias were grown at various greenhouse temperatures. Season determined vase life more than temperature or variety. Vase life was limited by wilting of the leaves. In fall, vase life decreased with decreasing greenhouse temperature from 18 days at 25C to 9 days at 15C. In spring, a temperature of 18C was optimal. Roxanne was more sensitive to wilting than the other varieties. A one day transport simulation decreased vase life. Bouvardias grown at higher temperatures were better in maintaining their initial weight.
