Abstract:
The variance within a random sample can be extremely large.
This is especially so for parameters like ethylene production (Blankenship and Unrath, 1987) and mineral content.
So it is difficult to draw definite conclusions from the sample's characteristics.
An alternative is using non-destructive methods.
With such methods we can follow each fruit from harvest until consumption.
These rather new methods are discussed below.
