Abstract:
Fruit quality and storage potential of individual apples varies considerably within a single tree (Palmer, 1989). Shading provides the basis for much of this variation.
However little is known of other within-tree factors influencing quality.
This study describes quality characteristics and mineral composition of fruit from one and two-year wood.
The role of local leaf area in explaining differences in fruit Ca content between fruiting positions is also explored.
