Abstract:
The influence of fruit age and fruit size on the level of ACC in parthenocarpic glasshouse cucumbers was studied in relation to fruit growth on the plant.
The time needed for fruit development varied greatly between individual cucumbers with fruit age at harvest varying between 15 and 42 days.
Fruit age had less influence on the level of ACC in cucumber fruits at harvest than fruit size.
Small fruits, up to 100 g FW, had a higher level of ACC than larger fruits.
Dry matter content decreased during fruit growth but was too low to be the only reason for the lower level of ACC found in larger fruits.
The results do not indicate that the shorter shelf life reported for cucumbers with a prolonged development on the plant, is related to a higher level of ACC in these fruits.
