EFFECTS OF SHORT TERM SUBSTRATE FLOODING ON GASEOUS EXCHANGE OF CARNATION

Authors:   F.X. Martínez, X. Fàbregas, L. Tapia, A. Caballero
Abstract:
Night and day short term (5 h) substrate flooding decreased carnation assimilation rates in both Orion and Diamonetta cultivars. Photosynthetic decrease was greater in half root flooded plants than in full root treatments. Assimilation restriction showed a clear non stomatal limitation (residual conductance decrease) pointing out a decrease in photosynthetic capacity. Flooding sligthly lowered shoot water potential but the decrease was higher in treatments affecting full root. This suggests that water potential is not the causing factor of the observed photosynthetic restriction.
