ISHS Acta Horticulturae 342: International Symposium on Horticultural Substrates other than Soil in situ

THE CONCENTRATION OF NUTRIENTS FOR GROWING ANTHURIUM ANDREANUM IN SUBSTRATE.

Authors:   C. Sonneveld, W. Voogt
Abstract:
Anthurium andreanum was grown in granulated polyphenol foam during two years. The nutrient solution used was added to the irrigation water in such concentrations that the EC-values varied between 0.6 and 3.0 dS m-1 (25°C). The EC values in the drainage water varied between 0.8 and 4.7. Two cultivars were grown viz. Tropical and Cuba.

Flower production and vegetative growth decreased linearly with increasing nutrient concentrations. With the cultivar Tropical the total flower weight decreased 8% and the vegetative plant weight 9% per unit EC value. With the cultivar Cuba the corresponding percentages were 13 and 11 respectively. The results suggest that an EC value of the nutrient solution of 0.7 dS m-1 can be recommended for optimal productions.

The effect of the nutrient concentration on the absorption of nutrients was examined by analysing young fully grown leaves. Guide values for nutrient contents were composed on the basis of these data.
