SUPPLEMENTARY LIQUID FEEDING ON ORNAMENTAL SHRUBS GROWN IN MEDIA AMENDED WITH SLOW RELEASE FERTILIZERS

Authors:   F.X. Fabregas, F.X. Martinez, A. Martinez, M. Viñals
Abstract:
Deutzia "Mont Rose", Forsythia "Mini Gold" and Pyracantha "Orange Glow" rooted cuttings were planted in three substrates: a catalan commercial shrub mix (Deciduous forest topsoil:peat:pine bark, 1/1/1 v/v/v), estonian peat:coarse sand (1/1 v/v) and estonian peat:medium sand (1/1 v/v). Substrates were fertilized with 1.5 kg of Triabon 3–4 months and 3 kg of Basacote 6 month/m3. After 2,5 month of culture one half of plants were supplementary fed with a nutrient solution. Growth was analyzed at three moments of culture: at the beginning (evaluation of rooted cuttings), after 2 months (before the administration of liquid feeding) and 1,5 months later. After 2 month of culture little differences were observed between substrates. Deutzia and Pyracantha grown better in peat:coarse sand mix and Forsythia in both sand mixes. Topsoil mix gave the worst growth results in absolute values. Supplementary liquid feeding 1,5 month later significantly or in absolute values improve growth results in the three studied species, specially in sand mixes.
