ISHS Acta Horticulturae 342: International Symposium on Horticultural Substrates other than Soil in situ

A RAPID METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF GROWING MEDIA

Authors:   R. Gabriels, W. Keirsbulck, H. Engels
Abstract:
A rapid, practical and low-budget method, taking only about 30–40 minutes, has been developed in order to determine dry bulk density, % moisture, % dry matter, % ash, % organic matter, porosity, % water on wet weight following gravity draining, % water on dry weight (watercapacity), water volume %, air volume % and shrinkage.

Classical growing media based on peat mixtures, composted bark, together with samples used in laboratory intercomparison runs, have been tested.

In general, the results were reasonably correlated with the I.S.H.S. international reference method for evaluating the quality criteria of growing media.
