| Abstract:
Growing chrysanthemum in peat substrates has special demands with respect to the stability of the material. A year round cropping brings along four till five plantings a year and for economic reason a utility for several years is necessary. This is only possible if coarse material is used. Peat types containing too much fine particles collapse and easily show a lack of airspace. In two experiments with chrysanthemums grown on different peat grades, the physical aspects of peat, irrigation method and the effect of these aspects on plant growth were studied. The experiments were carried out with peat substrates of Irish origin. All peat substrates were applied in a layer of 10 cm thickness. Water distribution by drip irrigation showed to be favourable over sub irrigation by ebb/flood system. The highest plant weights were obtained on the most coarse graded peat substrates. | |
