ISHS Acta Horticulturae 342: International Symposium on Horticultural Substrates other than Soil in situ

FOREWORD

Author:   M. Tattini
Abstract:
These proceedings represent the scientific presentation of the International Symposium on Horticultural Substrates Other Than Soil in situ. It was held 5-11 September 1993 at the Anglo-American Hotel in Florence, Italy, with 77 registered guests representing 18 countries.

These proceedings reflect current interests with respect to the use of soilless-substrates in nursery sector. Physical and chemical properties of horticultural substrates received the major attention during this symposium (50% of the oral contributes).

However relevant contributes were presented with respect to biological aspects of substrate as well as the session on growing techniques reflected new and interesting aspects of plant growing from both a scientific and commercial point of view.

I would like to thank both dr. O. Verdonck (Belgium) and dr. F. Lemaire (France), chairman respectively of the Commission for Plant Substrates and of the Working Group on Substrates in Horticulture Other Than Soil in situ, for their support during the Symposium.

I hope that the delegates attending to scientific programme and ladies programme appreciated their stay in Florence.

At the same time I'm almost sure that technical visits to some of the most representative nurseries of Tuscany, i.e. Vannucci Vivai in Pistoia, P. Pacini and C. Franchi nurseries, received attention and interest.

Finally I would like to wish a good work to the team operating in Naaldwick (The Netherlands) with the coordination of dr. Sonneveld, in organizing the next Symposium.
