Author:   Edward C. Winston
DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1993.341.29
Abstract:
Results are presented on the cumulation of a 15 year program designed to find alternative mango cultivars to complement the ‘Kensington Pride’ selection which currently comprises >90% of the north Queensland plantings. Detailed data on fruit characteristics and time of maturity were obtained from 112 lines at a wet coastal (≈ 17°S, 20 m elevation) and a dry highland (≈ 17°S, 570 m elevation) location. With the use of appropriate cultivars a 15+ week harvest period can be obtained compared with the brief 2–3 week period offered by ‘Kensington Pride’ in any one district. ‘Keitt’, ‘Palmer’, and the Queensland bred cultivar ‘R2E2’ were identified as the most promising cultivars to assist development of the Queensland mango industry.
