Abstract:
'Manila' mango trees reach heights and canopy diameters up to 20 m at 15 years of age. Even though planting densities are low (50 trees ha-1) closing of canopies and crowding of foliage drastically reduces yield. On the other hand, phytosanitary protection and the harvest itself are expensive operations. In order to reduce tree height of 'Manila' mango tree some cultivars like 'Irwin' (I), 'Esmeralda' (E) and 'Manila' (M), are being tested in several interstock/rootstock combinations. With the objective of studying the effect that such combinations have over the foliage growth, several growth indices were measured in the following treatments: M (seedling trees) M/I, M/M, M/M/M, M/E/I, M/I/I and M/E/M. Trees were evaluated when 9 years old during the main vegetative flush of 1990. Results indicated that treatments M/I/I and M/E/M, which are among the more compacted combinations, showed the lowest relative growth rates (291.2, 204.3 mg g-1 day-1) as well as unit leaf rates (2921.7, 1968.7 mg cm-2 day-1). No significant differences in leaf-area ratio were found between treatments.
