DEGREE-DAYS AND BASE TEMPERATURES REQUIRED FOR INFLORESCENCE AND FRUIT DEVELOPMENT IN MANGO 'MANILA'

Abstract:
Growth and development of tropical plants occurs more often between 10 °C and 40 °C. Development rates and temperature relationships are usually linear within those limits. Few references on this topic are available for mango. Because of this, calculations were made to determine degree-days and base temperatures (Tb) needed for completion of inflorescence elongation and fruit development. This was done for 'Manila' mango trees grown under different temperature conditions from 1989 to 1991. KNO3- and NH4NO3-induced flowering as well as natural blooming dates were measured. Inflorescence elongation was taken from bud break to fruit set, and fruit development from fruit set to fruit maturity. The results showed that 434. 7 degree-days with a Tb of 12 °C were required for inflorescence elongation, whereas 2292. 7 degree-days with a Tb of O. 33 °C were needed for fruit maturity to be reached. The use of the calculated Tb rather than other temperatures previously determined reduced variability in predicting degree-days for both phenological phases.
