CONTROL OF VEGETATIVE GROWTH AND INDUCTIVE OF REGULAR AND EARLY CROPPING IN 'ALPHONSO' MANGO WITH PACLOBUTRAZOL.

Abstract:
A field experiment was conducted for three succesive cropping years (1988,89 & 90) at Vengurla to induce regular cropping in a distinctly alternate-bearing mango cultivar Alponso with soil drench (5 g and 10 g per tree) and foliar (500, 1000 and 2000 ppm ) application of paclobutrazol in July-August every year. The pooled data revealed that paclobutrazol as soil drench @ both 5 g and 10 g per tree produced significantly minimum outbreaks of September-October vegetative flushes (5.12 and 5.31% ) as compared to untreated control (48.54%) with mean shoot length of 12.24 and 11.29 cm respectively as compared to control (19.65 cm). Both of these paclobutrazoltreatments gave 3 to 4 weeks early and profuse flowering (82.16 and 85.85%) as compared to control (34.16%) and recorded consistantly 2.6 times more annual yields (274.19 and 287.98 fruits per tree) than control (101.98 fruits) without affecting fruit size and quality. Although both the modes of application were significantly effective, soil drench was more significant, convenient and cost effective. Based on these results, recommendation of paclobutrazol application received spontaneous response from mango growers of the region. More than 100 farmers have treated about 13,000 mango trees of Alphonso, Ratna, Kesar, Pairi, Goamankur, Amrapali, Doodhpedha etc. of varying ages, situated at different locations, in 1991 with spectacular success.
