ISHS Acta Horticulturae 340: XII International Symposium on Horticultural Economics

APPLICATION OF THE PORTER METHODOLOGY IN ANALYZING THE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE OF HORTICULTURAL BRANCHES

Author:   E.H.J.M. de Kleijn
Abstract:
With the help of the theory of the American economist Michael Porter we have examined the international competitiveness of the seven Dutch horticultural subsectors (flower bulbs, floral, tree nursery, mushrooms, fruit, vegetables and starting materials). The technique Porter proposes in analyzing economies or sectors is very useful and gives interesting results for the horticultural sectors examined. The best results are obtained with least complex sectors. After examining the strengths and weaknesses of the Porter methodology, as applied to the horticultural sector, specific results for the flower bulb industry will be presented.
