STRUCTURAL CHANGES AND PRICE-FORMATION MECHANISMS ON THE MARKET FOR NURSERY PRODUCTS

Author:   E. Kaim
Abstract:
The market for nursery products in Germany has undergone fundamental structural changes. Former market mechanisms, especially the price orientation system, tend to fail. An investigation was carried out in order to analyse the causal structure of the changing processes. The results of the survey led to different categories of nurseries with respect to the farm-size, location and activity. A price list, reporting gross prices handled with rebates is used as an instrument for price orientation. The list has lost its former relevance and does not represent possibilities for realistic price orientation any more. Thus, the lack of market transparency increased transaction costs. Based on the results of the survey and on findings from former studies, possible strategies to overcome the information gap have been discussed.
