ISHS Acta Horticulturae 340: XII International Symposium on Horticultural Economics

ON PERFORMANCE OF URBAN VEGETABLE SUPPLY IN AFRICAN COUNTRIES

Author:   P. Moustier
Abstract:
Judgements on the lack of organization and efficiency of urban food systems in Africa are frequent but not often based on a rigorous assessment of criteria of efficiency used and roots of identified inefficiencies. The displayed research deals with a thorough assessment of the organization and performance of some vegetable supply systems in Africa in order to better understand how vegetable production and trade generate consumers' satisfaction and in what extent they create revenue. A "commodity chain" analysis (in French "filière") was conducted in three countries. The three case studies evidenced that supply irregularities result in marketing strategies to diminish risk of bad performance including confidence relationship with suppliers, delayed payments, small transactions, flexible units of sale. They may be detrimental to good exchange efficiency but fit an unfavourable supply context.
