SUCCESS ANALYSIS OF HORTICULTURAL FIRMS BASED ON BOOKKEEPING DATA

Author:   V. Bitsch
Abstract:
The study examines the bookkeeping data of 185 producers of pot plants with indirect sale in search for key factors of success in horticulture. The sample period encloses the years from 1982 to 1987. Based on different financial ratios the producers are classified by cluster analysis according to their performance. Three clusters are found each year, the successful producers, the average group, and the group with severe problems. For two specialization groups, producers of erica and azalea resp. producers of other species, group means are compared and correlations within groups are calculated. Some differences between ratios of the groups are observed, they do not always coincide with the expectations. Typical patterns of correlations in the performance groups are attained too.
