REORGANISATION OF GREEN HOUSE VEGETABLE FARMING IN NORTHERN GREECE

Authors:   C. Zioganas, I. Pavlou
Abstract:
This paper deals with the economics of green house vegetable farming in northern Greece under existing organisation and potential reorganisation.

In order to reorganise this intensified farming system at different green house sizes and ensure an improved level of income for the farm family, parametric programming was employed as the most appropriate technique. By parametrising the green house area from 0.25 to 2.50 stremmas we take 8 optimum plans with different combinations of early tomato, early cucumber and late cucumber as the most profitable among 8 alternative crops. The optimum plans increase the economic performance of green houses by 5.8% on average, though the farmers seem to operate rather rationally by applying cropping systems near optimum organisation.

The optimum plans proposed at different green house sizes are realistic and improve the farm income. By increasing the size, the typically available labour is fully utilised at the area of 2.17 stremmas.
