THE DEVELOPMENT OF APPROPRIATE QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS FOR HORTICULTURE IN EUROPE

Authors:   J.P. Ogier, M. Dillon
Abstract:
A new concept of quality is emerging in the market place with regard to fresh fruit and vegetables. It is total quality assurance and includes features which relate to how the crops are grown packed and presented. Existing grading and inspection procedures are not adequate for the new quality requirements. Recent food legislation in the U.K. has reinforced the need to extend quality assurance into all aspects of production and marketing. The development of quality systems to meet the quality assurance need must be based on sound scientific, management and commercial principles. A model for the development of such a system is proposed.
