ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF CLOSED PRODUCTION SYSTEMS IN GLASSHOUSE HORTICULTURE

Author:   M.N.A. Ruijs
Abstract:
In order to reduce environmental pollution by glasshouse industry the Dutch government issued various policy documents stating targets for the year 2,000. The overall objective is a safe, sustainable and competitive glasshouse industry which spares the environment as much as possible. The major part of the pollution consists of the leaching of fertilizers and pesticides to groundwater and surface water. To determine the prospects of closed production systems a simulation study was carried out jointly with several other research institutes.

The results indicate that closed production systems are economically viable, but this strongly depends on the crop. Closed production systems in which durable and reusable materials are used have a reduced emission of fertilizers and pesticides to the environment.
