Abstract:
Dry matter production, nitrogen uptake and changes in soil mineral nitrogen during crop growth of leek and Brussels sprouts were studied in a field trial, at different levels of nitrogen fertilizer. Dry matter production of Brussels sprouts increased with increasing nitrogen availability and maximum dry matter production was reached at 200 kg N ha-1. Nitrogen uptake increased linearly with nitrogen rates up to 300 kg N ha-1. Apparent nitrogen recovery was over 90 % and was independent of the amount of nitrogen applied. Total dry matter production of leek was lower and maximum dry matter production was reached at 125 kg N ha-1, apparent nitrogen recovery was 90 % at this rate, but at a rate of 250 kg N ha-1 the apparent nitrogen recovery was 51%.
