ISHS Acta Horticulturae 339: Workshop on Ecological Aspects of Vegetable Fertilization in Integrated Crop Production in the Field

STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF NITROGEN FERTILIZER USE IN THE CULTIVATION OF BRASSICA VEGETABLES

Author:   A.P. Everaarts
Keywords:   Brassica vegetables, nitrogen fertilizer, reduction of nitrogen losses, soil mineral nitrogen, fertilizer placement, split application, crop residues, catch crops, review
Abstract:
A review is presented of possible strategies to improve the efficiency of nitrogen (N) fertilizer use and reduce losses of N in the cultivation of Brassica vegetables. Subjects treated include determination of soil mineral N at planting, fertilizer placement and split application, use of aqueous ammonia, foliar application, tissue N analysis, N in crop residues and the use of catch crops. Amongst others it was concluded that growers must be urged to correct fertilizer applications for soil available N; also placement of fertilizer and, under certain conditions, split application need investigation. Studies of the root system and modelling of the N cycle in field vegetable production should be encouraged.
