ISHS Acta Horticulturae 339: Workshop on Ecological Aspects of Vegetable Fertilization in Integrated Crop Production in the Field

GENERAL AND QUANTITATIVE ASPECTS OF NITROGEN FERTILIZER USE IN THE CULTIVATION OF BRASSICA VEGETABLES

Author:   A.P. Everaarts
Keywords:   Brassica vegetables, nitrogen fertilizer recommendation, nitrogen uptake, apparent fertilizer recovery, crop residues, soil mineral nitrogen, roots, review
Abstract:
In the cultivation of Brassica vegetable crops in the Netherlands considerable amounts of nitrogen (N) fertilizer are usually applied to produce optimum yields of good quality. Recommendations for N fertilizer are comparatively high. Brassica vegetable crops take up large amounts of N. The crops have low harvest indices and substantial amounts of N are left in crop residues in the field after harvest. Compared to cabbage and Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower will leave more N in the soil at harvest. Data from both Dutch and other sources are presented to quantify the amounts of N involved. The study of the growth and development of the root system of Brassica vegetables in relation to N uptake has received insufficient attention.
