Abstract:
Major economic losses from fireblight are rare in England.
Blossom blight incidence is seldom high on pears but progressive stem invasion is a cause for concern in some orchards.
A high incidence of blossom blight is sometimes seen on mid or late flowering cider apples but stem invasion is rarely a problem in mature trees.
Disease on hawthorns is sporadic but some is seen every year, so a reservoir of inoculum is maintained.
Prevention and control of disease in orchards depends on grower vigilance and expertise, not on applications of protective agents during bloom.
A major problem now for advisers is the absence of experienced observers and the lack of opportunity and time for the field data collection necessary for reliable risk assessments, disease prevention and control.
