Abstract:
Since 1984, a collection of 55 cultivars has been planted in an experimental farm at Dax under the conditions of the South-West of France.
Plants were shoot-inoculated for two years in spring during the growing period.
The number of successful inoculations and the lengths of necrosis were recorded and used to get an index of relative susceptibility to fire blight.
Natural infections noted after bloom and their extensions on branches were also rated.
Results showed that, despite the great variability observed in the genus, most of tested cultivars were susceptible to fire blight.
Under these field conditions, the less susceptible ones appeared to be the slowly growing and small-leaved types.
This confirmed results previously described by Zeller (1979).
