Abstract:
The major objective of the Harrow pear breeding program is the incorporation of fire blight resistance into high quality fruiting cultivars for the fresh market.
Many sources of resistance have been used including cultivars and selections from Pyrus communis, P. ussuriensis and P. pyrifolia, with the fruit characteristics of P. communis being recovered by backcrossing to selected P. communis cultivars. 'Harrow Delight' and 'Harvest Queen' were named and released in 1981 for unrestricted commercial production, while 'Harrow Sweet' has recently been registered and protected in the European Economic Community.
Several other selections are in advanced stages of testing.
