IMMUNOLOGICAL DIFFERENTIATION OF ERWINIA HERBICOLA

Authors:   I. Hladka, I. Mraz, V. Kudela
Abstract:
The Erwinia herbicola isolates were divided according to their biochemical characteristics into 7 groups. Thereafter one isolate was selected at random from each of the seven biochemical groups and antisera were prepared against each of them, and also against the Erwinia herbicola CCM 2406 strain isolated from banana plants, by immunizing rabbits. Among the 473 Erwinia herbicola isolates tested against the CCM 2406 antiserum by means of the slide agglutination method, 12.6% of isolates reacted positively. Besides that 202 Erwinia herbicola isolates were also tested with antisera prepared against the seven at random selected representatives of the biochemically differing groups. No agglutination with these antisera was shown by 4% of examined strains. The remaining 96% of isolates were classified either into 7 serovar groups designated A, B, C, D, E, F and G, when they reacted only with a single antiserum, or into intermediary serovar groups, when the isolates reacted with two, three, or four antisera (59% of all isolates). The Eh CCM 2406 strain was classified into the serovar A. A certain interrelationship between biochemical and immunological properties manifested itself best in the more frequent sepovars A, B and E. The frequency of the occurrence of particular serovars was not depended on locality, host plant, or plant part.
