FEASIBILITY QUESTIONS IN FIREBLIGHT RISK ASSESSMENT

Author:   Dr. Eve Billing
Keywords:   weather data, field data, insects, wind, inoculum potential, MARYBLYT, BRS
Abstract:
The current input into risk assessment systems falls far short of the desired output for different needs and different users. It is important to distinguish, however, what is feasible from what is desirable. There is scope for improving the weather data input but it is the quality and quantity of the field data input that is in most need of improvement especially in relation to inoculum potential. Unfortunately, field data collection is a time-consuming exercise. System users, both advisers and growers, might be used to better advantage than at present. A priority area for further research is sources of inoculum for early flower infections. Another area of interest is the use of trajectory analyses for guidance on possible long distance spread of inoculum by insects or wing-born particles. Recent weather analyses have shown that, with adjustment, some principles used in the MARYBLYT model can be used to advantage, if adjusted, in conjuction with BRS (Billing's Revised System)
