ISHS Acta Horticulturae 338: VI International Workshop on Fireblight

FIREBLIGHT IN SWEDEN, EXPERIENCE AND FURTHER WORK

Author:   Maria K. Gråberg
Abstract:
Fireblight, Erwinia amylovora, was found for the first time in 1986 in the south east of Sweden, in an apple and pear growing orchard.

The disease has been found since then in other orchards, on Crataegus spp. and Cotoneaster spp.

The first strategy was to eradicate the disease completely. In 1989, when the weather conditions had been very favourable and the disease had spread even more, the strategie was changed. Nurseries and orchards were closely surveyed. Infections in the countryside were only eradicated when they were found in the neighbourhood of nurseries and orchards.

Tests were carried out to try to find out at which stage latent infections could be detected in the field.
