WORLDWIDE SPREAD AND PRESENT DISTRIBUTION OF FIRE BIGHT - AN UPDATE

Abstract:
Fire Blight of pear (Pyrus sp.) and apple (Malus sp.) and numerous other rosaceous host plants, cuased by Erwinia amylovora (Burr.) Winsl. et al., is regarded as one of the most destructive disease of pome fruits. Since the earliest known observation in 1780 in the Hudson Valley of New York, man has physically moved the disease to three locations around the world. To date, Fire Blight has been officially recorded in 31 countries, located mainly in western and eastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean region. Following is a brief but complete listing of all the known countries where Fire Blight has benn reported, presented by continent or region in the best chronological order.
