Abstract:
Since the introduction of alstroemeria as a new fresh cut flower, growers have inquired about production of alstroemeria as a containerized crop.
The recent availability of genetic dwarf alstroemeria cultivars has led to the need to develop techniques for successful containerized production.
Plants from California or Washington, with 3 to 6 shoots were transplanted on a monthly basis.
Plants flowered rapidly when planted in April through June, while flowering was delayed when planted in October through January.
Plant height was reduced for October through January plantings and increased as glasshouse temperature and ambient insolation increased throughout the spring and summer.
Container size (15, 18 or 20 cm, top diameter) did not affect time to flower but did affect the number of generative shoots at anthesis.
The greatest number of generative shoots occurred in the 20 cm containers.
The number of days to flower and plant height were reduced when plants were placed shallow in the container rather than deep.
