ISHS Acta Horticulturae 337: II International Symposium on the Development of New Floricultural Crops

CULTIVATION OF ZANTEDESCHIA SPECIES FOR POTTED PLANT PRODUCTION

Authors:   R.A. Reiser, R.W. Langhans
Abstract:
Zantedeschia Rehmanii superba 'Pink', Z. elliottiana x maculata 'Yellow' and Z. albomaculata 'White' were treated with gibberellic acid (GA3) as a preplant rhizome dip at 50, 100 and 500 ppm to induce flowering. The growth retardants Bonzi (paclobutrazol, PP 333) and Sumagic (uniconazole, XE-1019) were applied at 2 and 4 mg active ingredient (a.i.) as soil drenches. Results showed GA necessary for flower production and 100 ppm appeared most beneficial for flower number and ratio of flower deformities. The two growth retardants produced similar results and reduced foliage height more than flower height. A 2 mg rate of both growth retardants produced satisfactory results.

'Pink' and Z. elliotiana x maculata x Z. Rehmanii superba 'Flame' were grown in 4 environmentally controlled growth chambers with 11 h day/13 h night. Three temperature treatments of 21C constant, 24/18C (day/night) and 18/24C with fluorescent and incandescent lighting were maintained. A fourth chamber with HID lighting was set at 21C constant temperature 430 μmol m-2s-1 for comparison. All plants received a preplant GA dip at 100 ppm for flower induction. No significant differences were noted for flowering date, number of blooms or flower deformities. Foliage and flower heights were shortest at 18/24C and tallest at 21C constant, but the differences were not significant.
