MOLECULAR STRATEGIES FOR THE CONTROL OF PLANT VIRUS DISEASES

Abstract:
The capacity to transform plants with 'foreign' genes has stimulated a number of approaches for the generation of virus-resistant plants. One of these, 'coat protein-mediated resistance', has elicited considerable interest; field tests have been performed with a number of viruses, and it is anticipated that virus-resistant crop plants will soon enter the marketplace. Other strategies, such as 'replicase-mediated resistance', or transformation with antisense sequences, although less advanced in their research, also show promise of producing virus-resistant plants, which should make virus resistance generated by transformation with viral genes one of the first practical accomplishments of plant molecular biology. Although not covered here, active studies are underway to isolate natural resistance genes from plants, which, once characterized and transformed into other plants, should provide additional support for the proposition that the deleterious effects of viral disease on crop plants will eventually be history.
