Abstract:
The ability to induce somatic embryogenesis in plants appears to be a universal trait whose occurence depends on the interaction of an appropriate tissue with a appropriate induction stimulus.
The agricultural exploitation of somatic embryogenesis (embryogenics) has been under investigation over several decades and includes uses in clonal propagation; crop improvement (via regeneration for cell selection, embryo rescue, genetic transformation, somatic hybridizations, production of haploids and homozygous lines); metabolite production; disease elimination; and germplasm preservation.
